The Houston Museum of Natural Science
This museum was originally founded in 1909 and has grown steadily through the years. Its housed in a four-story building in Herman Park at 5555 Herman Park Drive. The museum also includes a planetarium, a butterfly center, and a giant screen theater. As you pass through the museum, you can visit dinosaur exhibits, mineral collections, and even pieces from the Faberge collection.
Although the museum features many items from Houston and Texas, international artifacts and cultures are also represented. One of the collections, for example, focuses on the history of ancient Egypt. The docents are experts on the huge collections in the museum and are happy to provide as much information as you could wish.
Space Center Houston
The Space Center opened in 1992 and covers more than 250,000 square feet. In this space, there are more than 400 artifacts from various space missions, including a Mercury 9 capsule, a lunar rover, the Gemini 5 capsule, and the Skylab trainer. The center also contains an amazing selection of moon rocks and numerous other pieces of space-faring history.
You can see the lectern President Kennedy stood at in 1962 when he committed to land an American on the moon in the 1960s. An astronaut gallery features the spacesuits worn by some of the first astronauts, together with information about the creation of the suits. You can even see examples of the next generation of Mars rovers.
The Health Museum
Health is important to everyone, and this museum highlights its importance through a variety of exhibits. Unlike many museums, this museum involves more practical applications of knowledge than merely viewing dioramas and exhibits. The numerous exhibits here cover everything from a working heart to an interpretive dance tableau illustrating how cancer grows and spreads.
You can even take part in experiments, for example splicing DNA or examining cells under a microscope. The Health Museum is located at 1515 Hermann Drive.
