Stephen F. Austin State Park

Named for the “Father of Texas”, this 663-acre park on park Road 38 in San Felipe is a quiet wilderness filled with trails and hidden treasures to discover. Nine major trails crisscross the area, ranging from the Opossum Loop or 0.34 miles to the ironwood Trail at 1.04 miles.

If you’re looking to spot wildlife, we recommend the 0.53-mile Cottonwood Trail, where you can see gray foxes, bobcats, and other animals. If you prefer natural vistas, take the Barred Owl Trail. It’s a 0.69-mile trail with amazing vistas of the Brazos River.

Galveston Island State Park

If you’re searching for a hike over varied terrain, Galveston Island needs to be on your list. It offers everything from dunes to marshlands. It’s also only an hour’s drive from downtown Houston. Twelve trials pierce the terrain, and you’ll find an experience for any level of hiking ability here. If you’re seeking a short hike, take the Heritage Trail, a 0.3-mile informative view of the island’s environment.

Hikers who prefer to experience and see everything will love the Oak Bayou Paddling Tail. This 5.4-mile round trip allows you to experience the full beauty of the environment, from seagrass beds to out-of-the-way bayous and open coves to wetlands restoration. Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center

A scant 15 minutes drive from downtown, and within the city limits, you’ll find this amazing slice of nature. Wood, prairie, and wetlands are all part of this park which includes a lake and numerous ponds. There are over two miles of hiking possibilities here, split into six different trails. This makes it a perfect site for a family-friendly hike that is suitable for every level of experience.
